STANDBY (2015) PERFORMANCE

YOOJIN LEE

10th DECEMBER 2022, 16.00

On the afternoon of Saturday 10th December, the titular work in the exhibition will be activated by the artist for a special performance. Two PA speakers stand alert in the gallery – one draped with a digital print of a scaffolded-building, concealed by yellow-and-blue-striped netting. Sounds of traffic fill the room and underpin the creaks of crickets. A disembodied voice delivers a hypnotic recital. This is not a lullaby. ‘Please stay awake’, she says. ‘Please do not fall asleep’. Listening to the piece, deciphering meaning in strange fragments of text and textures of noise, one is held in a prolonged moment of suspense. A moving skate for heavy-lifting and a pillow await: a movement, a motion, a stasis or an oscillation.

Yoojin Lee was born in Seoul andlives in London. She works across and in-between performance, sound, text, installation and video. Her work engages with conditions of (in)activity and (un)productivity; particularly by thinking/feeling through sleep, sloth and slowness.
